Heavy blow to Alvin Chau's empire - arrested for illegal gambling
During a press conference on Sunday, Secretary for Security Wong Sio Chak stressed that the arrest of Alvin Chau Cheok is the culmination of two years of investigation. The arrest is also unrelated to an announcement from the Wenzhou Public Security Bureau in China 48 hours earlier. The Wenzhou Public Prosecutions Office has already said that they have issued an arrest warrant for Chau.
The arrest warrant for Chau, a 47-year-old businessman from Hong Kong, was issued by the Macau police. It alleged that he is the mastermind of a criminal syndicate, which is believed to be responsible for $200billion in illegal cross-border gambling. PJ stressed that the process will be conducted in accordance with Macau's laws and will work with mainland authorities to prosecute Chau.
According to the police statement, the authorities of Macau are investigating a case that involves a large amount of money. The Bureau of Prisons has also requested that Chau be handed over to seek leniency. As of press time reported by many authoritative gambling forums and news sites, however, there is no official word on Chau's fate. Meanwhile, the Suncity Group has said that it is unaware of any charges against it. It is unknown as to whether the government will seek to prosecute the group for illegal gambling.
Arrest For Alvin Chau Cheok-wa
The arrest warrant for Chau was issued by the Wenzhou People's Procuratorate. The examining magistrate ordered five of the eleven suspects to be held in custody while six were released on bail with pre-trial conditions. They will have to report to the police on a regular basis and cannot leave Macau. While the exact amount of bail was not disclosed, the court did not provide information about the bail amount for the individual defendants.
Chinese police arrested Chau at a hotel in Macau on Sunday after receiving information about his alleged activities. Although he had been arrested in the past, the incident is now being investigated in mainland China. The Wenzhou Municipal People's Procuratorate has launched an investigation of the group in order to find out if Chau is guilty of a crime. After an extensive investigation, the Wenzhou municipal prosecutor has charged Chau and three others in the group for illegal gambling.
Earlier, the police arrested Alvin Chau Cheok Wa, the CEO of Suncity Group Holdings ltd in Macau. The police said the businessman was arrested for suspected illegal gambling. The authorities also seized MOP$3 million in cash from the arrestees. The arrestees' names were not released in the public domain. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange website had a copy of the seized items.

The gambling legislation in China
The Chinese government has been taking aggressive measures to combat gaming addiction. While Macau was the first administrative region to pass gambling legislation, the rest of the country will likely follow. While the laws are very strict, they are still a far cry from the U.S. and Europe. However, there are many signs that gambling in China is on the rise. Listed below are some of the most controversial cases in the industry.
Mainland China is home to some of the strictest gambling laws in the world. All forms of gambling are illegal, including online, land-based, and casual. Even gambling in foreign countries is not allowed. In fact, the Chinese Communist Party has banned foreign operators from opening casinos in the country to attract Chinese citizens. People who are caught betting for profit are generally fined or arrested and can spend up to 3 years in jail. Despite the stringent laws, the economy in China continues to grow.
In January 2018, China's Ministry of Public Security announced an amnesty for people who have pleaded guilty to illegal gambling. Anyone who confesses to involvement in illegal gambling will be spared serious punishment if they confess to their involvement by 30 April. In a joint notice, the Ministry and Supreme People's Court and Procuratorate have also agreed to grant amnesty to people accused of facilitating or profiting from illegal gambling.
In October of 2017, the Chinese government passed a law that allows Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators to operate in China. This allowed online gambling businesses to open offices in the country. Thousands of Chinese nationals moved to the Philippines to work for online gaming operators, serving as marketing agents to attract Mandarin-speaking players. Some of these companies have even become shirt sponsors of English Premier League football clubs. Some of the most popular Chinese online gambling sites include Dafabet, W88, and 888.
While China has a long history of regulating gambling, recent developments are causing a major shake-up. The new laws will limit gaming time for youths to three hours each weekend. This is a major step towards preventing video game addiction. The Chinese government is taking steps to restrict gaming in China. The goal is to prevent gambling from becoming a major business in China. There is a lot of competition between foreign and domestic casinos in China.
What to expect from the future?
In the coming year, China is also likely to implement new gambling legislation. The National Press and Publication Administration, which regulates the video game market in China, has announced new rules for minors. These new gaming regulations will allow kids to play games for three hours a week at weekends and an hour on public holidays. Previously, underage gamers were allowed to play online games for 90 minutes a day. The new rules will be enforced at the end of February, and it is not known whether there will also be updates in the gambling sector.
