Over the past 4-5 years, Net Entertainment has worked very hard to establish itself as one of the top three iGaming software developers in the world. By all metrics, its efforts have been successful. Back in 2011, NetEnt introduced a video slot game titled Alien Robots. Through this game's look into the future of robot technology, the company was able to showcase its ability to create cutting edge video and audio features in support of a game. The player will also find features that would be considered quite innovative by most standards.
Alien Robots is a 5-reel video slot with a format that gives the player a choice between 243 different ways to win or 30 pay lines. Depending on what choice the player makes, the betting range goes from a low of $.01 up to a high of $150. When applied towards the highest possible payout, the largest possible jackpot on this non-progressive game calculates out to $25,000.
The game's standard, regular paying symbols are represented by playing card numbers 10 through Ace, plus five different robots (red, yellow, green, orange and blue). Note: Each symbol shows two different payouts that correspond with the player's chosen game format. In all cases, the 30 pay line methodology comes back with the highest payouts because the amount wagered is going to be higher. The "alien" wild acts as the game's primary wild symbol. It is used to substitute for all other symbols except the spaceship scatter symbol.
If the player lands 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols on a pay line, they are awarded 10, 20 or 50 free spins based on the number of scatters that appeared. During the free spins round, free spins can be re-triggered in the same manner as the base game. Also, wild symbols become sticky and expanding wilds during all free spins.
Verdict: Anyone familiar with NetEnt's games portfolio would immediately note that the lack of a bonus and/or gamble game is quite unusual. However, it was a bit more common 5 years ago. Aside from a couple of decent video features, this game really deserves nothing more than an average rating. With that said, it was truly a great idea to give players the power to select their own game format. In the future, it would make sense for more developers to use this kind of innovation to help make the player a bigger part of the gaming process.
