Legal casino gambling in the state of Connecticut has been around for the past few decades. The actual number of casino resorts in this state is limited as compared to other popular gambling destinations in the United States. However, the two casino resort and hotel properties in the state rank near the top of the list for avid casino gamblers.

The Origins of Casino Gambling in The United States

The first casino resort and hotels were built in Nevada around the Las Vegas area. While most people trace the origins of the Las Vegas casino industry back to the Flamingo, Nevada actually legalized gambling in 1931. The first casino with a hotel was the El Rancho Vegas which first opened its doors in 1941. The rest is history in this town’s growth and expansion to become the “Casino Gambling Capital of The World.”

The next big foray into casino resorts and hotels was in the New Jersey seaside town of Atlantic City in the early 1980’s. Starting with Resorts Casino & Hotel on the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, this town quickly became the biggest gambling destination on the East Coast.

Turning to the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi, casino gambling came to the Biloxi area in the early 1990’s. This area grew to become third biggest region in the country for housing some of the most popular gambling resorts in the casino industry.

The origins of casino gambling in the state of Connecticut can be traced back to the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Tribe. As one of the oldest reservations in the country, they became pioneers of an Indian casino gaming industry that has expanded into multiple states over the past few decades.

The Mashantucket Tribe opened the Foxwoods Resort Casino in 1992. As the gateway to casino gambling in the Northeast, this quickly became a tourist destination that drew visitors from all across the nation. Today, Foxwoods still holds the designation of being the largest resort casino in North America.

Today’s Casino Gambling Industry in Connecticut

Following in the footsteps of Foxwoods, the first expansion of casino gambling in Connecticut was the Mohegan Sun as part of the Mohegan Indian Tribe. Built in 1996 in Uncasville, this gaming resort became the perfect complement to Foxwoods in helping Connecticut become the premier travel destination for casino gambling in the New England states.

Together, these two gaming venues make up the land-based portion of the casino gambling industry in Connecticut. Both properties have expanded their facilities over the years, including a brand new casino at Foxwoods in 2008. Originally called the MGM Grand at Foxwoods, it was renamed Fox Tower in 2013. It is connected to the original Foxwoods Resort Casino by a covered moving walkway.

Where to eat?
When it comes to dining, there are an almost unlimited amount of choices to meet anyone’s needs. Fine Dining options include Vue 24, Alta Strada and Caputo Trattoria as some of the more popular choices. The California Pizza Kitchen, Guy Fieri’s Kitchen & Bar and Hard Rock Café highlight the causal dining choices. The entertainment options at Foxwoods run the gambit from nightclubs and specialty bars to a full calendar of musical events at its various concert venues. Many of today’s top musical acts routinely perform at Foxwoods as one of their favorite stops on tour.

There is a full service spa, golf courses and a bowling ally onsite to go along with a wide variety of shopping options. Along with the resort’s massive casino floor, you can access all the gambling action from the convenience of a handheld device at Foxwoods Online.
