One of the principal reasons that it is hard to resist the lure of placing a wager, or taking a few spins on one of the mega-sized jackpot progressive slots, is a dream of striking THE big one. However, even the most avid dreamers among us hardly have dream big enough of the fortune made by one incredibly lucky Greek. This man, over three years, managed to rack up the longest recorded winning streak in history. His legendary lucky streak simply became known as The Run.

The History

November 1st, 1950, was a day in history significant for the attempted assassination of US President Harry Truman. It also was a day that Pope Pius XII defined the Munificentissimus Deus a new Roman Catholic dogma. It also marked a significant change in the face of aerial combat after a flight of American propeller driven Mustang P51s came face-to-face with six Mig15 jet fighters in the air over Korea.

But most importantly, it also marked the birth of Anargyros Nicholas Karabourniotis. Born to a dirt-poor construction worker-father in the town of Antypata, on the Greek island of Cephalonia. Better known as Archie Karas, a pool-shooting, poker-playing Greek American high-roller, forced during his teens to shoot marbles in order to ward off hunger pains but eventually grew up to become famous for having recorded the longest extensively documented winning streak in the history of casino-based gambling.

For anyone having the dare to emulate Archie’s now famous footsteps, finding a trustworthy betting partner would be of paramount importance. As such, I recommend visiting one of the prime online casino and sportsbook affiliates such as Betenemy where you will find some in-depth reviews. When visiting you will find great advice on all things relating to sports betting and online casinos. This includes great guidelines on where and how to start your favourite pastime/career as a punter, selecting the correct casino or sportsbook most likely to meet your requirements, as well as finding the best value special bonuses and promotions.

The Fame (and the ruin)

In early December 1992, Archie, who at this stage in life had already built a reputation as a superb poker player and an expert pool shark, lost the entirety of his fortune. Soon after he arrived in Las Vegas with the remaining grand total of $50 in his pocket and, shortly thereafter went on the longest winning streak in the history of gambling.  During that time, his initial $50 would turn into $40 million.

Archie, starting out his run at The Mirage had already hit a hot streak with his meagre $50 stake. That was before spotting a fellow poker player from the Los Angeles scene whom he convinced to lend him $10,000. Archie was quick to turn his loan into $30,000 playing Razz. Returning $20,000 to his kindly backer, it left Archie with $10,000. He then went off to find a wealthy, respected pool, and poker player in a bar adjacent to the Liberace Plaza. He challenged him into a series of 9-ball pool games at $5000 each, which netted him another couple of hundred thousand dollars.

His run continued to net him a bankroll of approximately $7 million within three months of his arrival in Vegas. This run of unbelievable winning fortune continued over the next 2 ½ years until finally ending in 1995.

At the end, he went in excess of $40 million only to lose most of his money inside of a three-week period.
