The legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table has been a part of world folklore for centuries. The theme has also inspired many iGaming software developers to use the King Arthur storyline as the basis for a video slot game. In the case of Microgaming, the resulting video slot was Avalon, named after the mythical city where the Excalibur sword was forged into stone. Given this was one of Microgaming's earliest video slot offerings, the game is often credited with helping to put the company on the iGaming map.
Avalon is played with a standard 5-reel, 20 pay line format. The game's minimum betting requirement is $.01 per pay lines with a maximum of $.50 per pay line. With only one coin allowed per spin, and extremely low payouts, Avalon is better-suited for beginners who want to learn about video slots without risking much money.
The game's standard low-paying symbols are represented by playing card numbers 10 thru Ace, plus period artifacts like jewels, a chalice and a crown. The "Avalon" game logo acts as the game's wild symbol, which is used to substitute for all of the other icons with the exception of the game's designated scatter symbol, which is represented by the Lady of the Lake icon.
With two or more scatter symbols, the player becomes an instant winner. If the player manages to land three or more scatters, the reward is 12 free spins with multipliers. During free spins only, a treasure chest appears as an extra wild, which helps increase the player's chances of winning money. Unfortunately, the largest possible jackpot on this game is 3,000 coins, which occurs if the player lands five Avalon wild symbols.
Verdict: Unlike many of Microgaming's later games, Avalon comes with very limited video features and an audio soundtrack that lacks imagination. With that said, it should be noted this game became popular enough to inspire a sequel Avalon II. In the annals of Microgaming history, Avalon II remains one of the company's most popular slot games. In this day and age, players will tend to be disappointed by Avalon. A big part of the problem is the game's lofty reputation from back in the day. If players want to check out a video slot from the early days of iGaming, Avalon is as good a place to start as anywhere else. After checking out this one, playing the sequel will be a delight.
