After the success of its first Laura Croft - Tomb Raider video slot game, Microgaming decided there needed to be a sequel. Given the high expectations players were going to have for the sequel, it was incumbent on the company's game developers to come up with something extraordinary. After playing the game with its many features, it's safe to say they succeeded. Tomb Raider 2 is the next adventure in the Laura Croft saga.
Tomb Raider 2 (or Tomb Raider - Secret of the Sword) is a 5-reel, 30 pay line 3D video slot that comes complete with iconic movie sound bites and video features. The game's minimum betting requirement is $.01 per pay line with a maximum of $.20 per pay line. Even after allowing the player to play 10 coins at a time, the game still comes back as a relatively low-risk gambling endeavor.
The standard low-paying symbols are represented by playing card numbers 10 through Ace, plus the Laura Croft character is four different outfits and poses. The Laura Croft headshot serves as the game's wild symbol. It subs for everything except the scatter and bonus symbols. The first scatter symbol is a green artifact. If the player hits 3 or more of these scatter symbols, they are awarded 10 free spins will "rolling reels." During the free spins round, these rolling reels will disintegrate after the initial spin and create a new cell alignment that could render additional winnings.
Another interesting feature is the "super mode" feature. On a random basis, three cells will be filled with extra wilds, plus the player is awarded 5 free spins with those wild symbols locked for the duration of the free spins. In this case, free spins cannot be re-triggered. The game's third exciting feature comes as the player encounters the British passport scatter symbol. Each time it appears on the center row of each reel, it locks in. This continues until the players has locked on all five reels, which takes them to the "Global Adventure" bonus. During this game, the player keeps searching for ex-caliber sword fragments on a 3X5 matrix until they uncover two booby traps and finish the game.
Verdict: Tomb Raider 2 is a good example of Microgaming at its best. This feature rich game has all the requisite components that are needed to keep players coming back for more. Here's to hoping Microgaming will someday come out with the second sequel, forming a Tomb Raider trilogy.
